Heather Lee Birdsong was born and grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, among the dust, tumbleweeds and glittering façades. While she has always been drawn to creating pictures, she began to understand artmaking as a way to reflect and potentially shape the world around her during her time as a women's studies major at UNLV.
She abandoned her hometown in 2005 and relocated to Portland, Oregon to pursue her interest in fine art full-time. In May 2011, she earned her BFA in Intermedia from PNCA, where she studied printmaking and painting. She uses mythology as a lens through which to examine and repurpose visual symbols embedded in the collective unconscious, a term used to describe the subconscious part of the mind that is common across a given culture.
