The history of American landscape painting is intertwined with Manifest Destiny, the ugliness of colonization and capitalism made palatable through romanticized re-imaginings. That i am drawn to paint landscapes disturbs me. The title for this work is self-mocking, derived from this James McNeil Whistler quote: "…how dutifully the casual in Nature is accepted as sublime, may be gathered from the unlimited admiration daily produced by a very foolish sunset."
